TRIP SUMMARY:
Focusing on community, materialism and environmental action, this program offers in-depth teaching and discussion that will be incorporated into each day of the 6-day raft trip as well as into the 1/2-day of travel from Salt Lake City to Moab, UT the day before the raft trip.
TRATHEN HECKMAN
- Author and activist Trathen Heckman is the co-founder and Executive Director of Daily Acts, Executive Director of Green Sangha, and publisher of the award-winning sustainability journal ripples.
He applies Buddha-mind and eco-design to the simple daily acts at the heart of healthy lives and communities. Trathen has given more than a hundred local, national, and international presentations and workshops on sustainability, ecological design and the regenerative power of our daily actions.
NATHANIEL CORUM - Nathaniel Corum is an architect and a Programs Manager at Architecture for Humanity. Corum has worked with Indigenous Community Enterprises, Red Feather, and AfH on American Indian Community Initiatives and works to develop and research appropriate building prototypes and materials for diverse projects and the Open Architecture Network. He continues research on culturally and climate-appropriate housing prototypes as a part of the agritecture research project.
Corum studied at Stanford University and received a Master s in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin culminating in a Fulbright Scholarship to study architectural preservation and urban poverty issues in North Africa. He is the recipient of a Rose Architectural Fellowship and author of Building a Straw Bale House from Princeton Architectural Press.
MEGAN SLANKARD - Megan Slankard is one of the finest young singer/songwriters on the West Coast and a passionate advocate for the environment. Her most recent full length CD, entitled Freaky Little Story, was named one of the top five CDs of 2005 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. She takes a break from the recording studio to entertain us for a week on the river!
PRIDE WRIGHT - Pride Wright is an activist, entrepreneur, publisher, and award-winning environmental journalist. He is or has been the publisher of the Harbinger Magazine, the Green Steps Journal, and the Brushwood Chronicle, and has contributed articles to publications as diverse as ripples, Gear Trends, the Sentient Times, and Skiing, among others. He has worked with numerous environmental groups, and was a founding board member for Forest Watch.
